Black River Country Club
Black River Country Club in Port Huron marked an important milestone in 2026, celebrating 100 years of golf while beginning a new chapter under new ownership. Founded in 1926 as a nine-hole course, the club has grown into an established 18-hole public facility known for mature trees, traditional shot values, and a scenic setting along the Black River. A century after its founding, Black River continues to offer the kind of straightforward, strategic golf that has kept generations of players coming back.
The par-71 layout stretches 6,501 yards from the Black tees, with a 71.6 course rating and 129 slope. The White tees play 6,254 yards, while the Green tees offer a shorter 5,510-yard option. Rather than relying on extreme length, Black River uses gently rolling terrain, tree-lined fairways, strategic bunkering, water, and elevation changes to create its challenge. The result is a course where placement matters and golfers are likely to use a wide range of clubs throughout the round.
The scorecard shows plenty of variety from hole to hole. The front nine includes the 526-yard par-5 sixth and closes with a 410-yard par 4, while the back side features the 509-yard par-5 No. 14 and another par 5 at No. 18, playing 537 yards from the back tees. With five par 3s, several substantial par 4s, and four par 5s across the round, the layout provides a balanced test without becoming repetitive.
Black River also has a notable competitive history. The club has served as a qualifying-round host for the Buick Open, and its fairways have welcomed accomplished players including Byron Nelson, Jimmy Demaret, and Ben Hogan. Those connections to earlier generations of the game added another layer of significance to the club’s 100th anniversary celebration in 2026.
After the round, The Black River Grille provides a casual place to stay for a meal or drink. Large windows overlook the golf course and river, while the menu includes homemade soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, and other familiar favorites. The restaurant is open to golfers and non-golfers alike, adding another reason to spend time at the club beyond the final hole.
With a century of history behind it and new ownership guiding its next chapter, Black River Country Club remains a distinctive part of the Port Huron golf community.
