As golfers set out on the first of these 18 holes, they are reminded of the classic courses from the Carolinas as it meanders through native wetlands and marsh areas that push back against dense oak and cypress forests. Whereas the front nine may be considered a more traditional North American course, the back nine, in contrast, might find itself more at home in the British Isles. The fully links-style design is complete with extensive perimeter mounding, pot bunkers and lush fairways.

The course at Mystic Dunes Gold Club features elevation changes of up to 80 feet, with large, contoured greens reminiscent of Augusta National. In designing the greens, Koch drew heavy inspiration from Dr. Alister MacKenzie, the esteemed golf course architect-turned-legend of Augusta. Like those of MacKenzie, Koch's greens at Mystic Dunes Resort and Golf Club are identified by their large size, severe undulation patterns and distinct elevations. As if sculpted from blocks of marble, the graceful curves of Mystic Dunes' greens are perhaps the closest examples of MacKenzie greens that Florida has to offer.
