Pohlcat Golf Course
Pohlcat Golf Course, located in the heart of Michigan, offers a one-of-a-kind golfing experience that has become a "must play" for golfers all over Michigan and its surrounding areas. Designed by former PGA Tour pro and Mt. Pleasant native Dan Pohl, the par-72 championship-style course offers a challenging yet fair design that combines the beauty of northern Michigan scenery with a links-style feel.
The course runs alongside the scenic 100-foot wide Chippewa River and the surrounding wetlands, providing players with stunning views and a unique golfing experience. The design of the course started in 1990, and Dan Pohl was determined to offer the best hole-by-hole golf experience in Michigan. He entrusted some of the best in the business to help him break ground, and due to the pristine conditions of the area, no machines were permitted near the river bank. During the construction of the 17th hole, Dan and his team cut, chained, and burned trees by hand to make room for the fairways. The hard work paid off, and Pohlcat was named one of "America's Twelve Best New Golf Courses" in 1992 by Golf Digest. The landscape of the course is impressive, with the majestic Chippewa River cutting in and out of holes framed by waving long grasses and tall trees.
Pohlcat has four sets of tees for golfers to choose from, with the championship tees playing 6,954 yards with a rating of 74.2 and a slope of 140. The yardages range from 6,258 yards on the middle tees to 5,140 yards from the front tees, catering to players of all skill levels. Golfers can warm up at Pohlcat's expansive practice facilities, which include a natural-grass driving range with five target greens, a chipping green, and two putting greens. The short game practice area is also equipped with a pitching/chipping area and a practice bunker.
The clubhouse, a 22,000 square-foot log building, features a full-service pro shop stocked with all the top names at competitive prices. The restaurant, called The Den, offers a delicious menu with an included hot dog and chips. The courteous staff and beautiful landscape make The Den a great place to finish off your round.
In May 2004, Dan Pohl was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, a testament to his outstanding contributions to the sport of golf in Michigan. Pohlcat Golf Course is a tribute to Dan's passion for the game and his hometown, and it continues to provide golfers with a unique and memorable golfing experience in central Michigan.
