Wellman Golf Club

A Rebirth of Golf Tradition in Johnsonville, South Carolina

Nestled in Johnsonville, South Carolina, Wellman Golf Club once stood as one of the top-10 public courses in the state. Its legacy began in 1966 when a group of local businessmen constructed the first nine holes with assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. By 1971, textile company owner Jack Wellman took charge of the club, completing the remaining nine holes.

Designed by Ellis Maples and Ed Seay, the 7,018-yard course quickly became a challenging play for golfers. With water on nine holes and Bermuda fairways, Wellman offered a unique blend of elevation, length, and water features.

Despite its prestige, the Wellman Country Club closed in 2010 after filing for bankruptcy. A new chapter began in 2020 when Florence County purchased the property, subsequently leasing it to the City for construction and operation as a public course.

Revitalization and Reopening

Renowned golf course designer Rees Jones, alongside Bryce Swanson, led the redesigning efforts of the course. Their enhancements included new mounds, bunkers, a fresh irrigation system, and new grass planting. These efforts culminated in a grand reopening on June 1.

The Course

Offering 18 holes of championship golf, the course welcomes players of every skill level. The different tee boxes available provide yardages ranging from 5,287 to 7,247, ensuring a suitable challenge for all golfers. The course's handicap system further refines the playing experience. Wellman recognizes the importance of practice, offering a full driving range, pitching/chipping area, and putting green. These facilities, along with golf instruction options, help golfers hone their skills and enjoy their best round.

Wellman Golf Club stands as a testament to the enduring love for the game of golf. With its rich history, challenging design, revitalization, and commitment to golfer development, the club has reclaimed its place as a premier destination for golf enthusiasts. Whether a regular player or a visitor to Johnsonville, Wellman Golf Club invites you to experience its unique blend of tradition and innovation on the fairways.
