Innisbrook Golf Resort
There are many places to play golf in Florida, but there's only one Innisbrook Golf Resort — the host of the PGA TOUR's Valspar Championship each April, and arguably the foremost destination for living the Florida Golf Lifestyle.
All of Innisbrook's four championship courses — Copperhead, North, South, and Island — were designed by Lawrence Packard, resulting in a resort-wide consistency in vision and quality. The innovative designs presented by Packard feature elements which harken back to the sandhills and foothills of Georgia and Carolina, a welcome change of pace from typical Florida golf.
The stunningly beautiful Island Course has played host to US Open Qualifiers, NCAA Championships (including where Phil Mickelson won his NCAA Championship) and is equally as lengthy and demanding as the very popular Copperhead Course where the PGA TOUR plays.
The opening hole wastes no time in setting the tempo of the front nine. Though not particularly long, its peninsular green juts out at a right angle into the picturesque Lake Innisbrook, creating a dangerous proposition on only the second shot of the day. From there, you'll pick through tight fairways and well-bunkered greens.
After making the turn and teeing off on No. 10, you'll notice a slightly different flavor. Marked elevations changes not typical of Florida golf crop up through these middle holes. Then, upon nearing the finish line, you'll meet Nos. 17 and 18, named "High Anxiety" and "Double Cross," respectively. No. 17, a 222-yard par 3, forces a carry to a false-front green with water short-right and deep bunkers left and back. Not to be outdone, No 18. forces a carry as well — on the tee shot and the approach.
There's a reason professionals the world over love to play at Innisbrook Golf Resort, and there's never been a better time to find out why for yourself.
