The Woods Golf Club
Tucked into the tranquil pine forests of Whispering Pines, just minutes from the heart of North Carolina’s golf-rich Sandhills region, The Woods Golf Club offers a refreshing blend of classic design, friendly atmosphere, and playability for all skill levels. Formerly known as Whispering Woods, the course has built its reputation on a layout that balances challenge with fun.
Crafted more than thirty years ago by Ellis Maples—a name synonymous with golf architecture in the Carolinas—The Woods gracefully navigates the undulating terrain of the Sandhills. Maples’ design incorporates uphill and downhill shots, doglegs, and elevation changes that engage players without overwhelming them. According to his son, Dan Maples, “It is a golf course designed with the average player in mind, but good players won’t find a pushover.” That spirit still guides every round played today.
The course measures 6,126 yards from the tips with a slope of 133 and a rating of 70.2, offering a compelling test for experienced players while remaining approachable from the front tees. Multiple tee boxes allow golfers to tailor the challenge to their game, and the par-71 routing keeps play moving at a relaxed pace.
In 2013, The Woods underwent a full greens renovation, upgrading all 18 putting surfaces to Champion Bermuda Ultradwarf—a premium surface known for its durability, speed, and consistent roll. It was a transformative improvement that elevated the course’s playability while preserving the classic feel.
Beyond the scorecard, what truly sets The Woods apart is its atmosphere. Known as the “Friendliest Course in the Pinehurst Area,” the staff and regulars cultivate a laid-back energy that welcomes first-timers and repeat guests alike. Whether you’re chasing a personal best, enjoying a casual round with friends, or just soaking up a sunny North Carolina afternoon, The Woods delivers.
