Chestnut Mountain Golf Club
Tucked into the wooded hills of Mills River, North Carolina, Chestnut Mountain Golf Club offers players a quintessential mountain golf experience with a rich blend of natural beauty and strategic play. Formerly known as High Vista Golf Club, the course blends mature trees, rolling elevation changes, and serene water features into a layout that’s as scenic as it is challenging.
From the moment players step onto the course, the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains sets the tone for a tranquil yet demanding round. Towering oaks and whispering pines line the fairways, while colorful azaleas and reflective ponds accentuate the landscape. The routing is classic mountain golf, full of elevation shifts, blind approaches, and dramatic vistas, yet it remains accessible to all skill levels with five sets of tees ranging from just over 5,000 yards to more than 6,200 yards.
Ongoing improvements have elevated the experience for both returning and new players. A brand-new golf shop welcomes guests with views worth lingering over, while freshly installed signage and updated carts improve navigation and comfort throughout the round. New pins as well as flags emblazoned with the new Chestnut Mountain logo and ongoing bunker restoration efforts signal a commitment to quality and hospitality that matches the beauty of the setting.
Beyond the fairways, The Robinson Pub serves as a welcoming post-round destination and a gathering place for locals and members alike. With a menu of classic pub fare—burgers, sandwiches, wings, and shareables—the atmosphere is relaxed but refined, featuring indoor and outdoor seating. The pub is also home to “Music on the Green,” a live concert series that turns the course’s scenic backdrop into a stage for summer evenings. The pub opens Wednesday through Sunday at 11AM.
Whether you’re visiting the Asheville area or seeking a new home course in the mountains, Chestnut Mountain delivers a serene yet challenging round with memorable views on every hole. It’s the kind of course where locals proudly bring guests and where visiting golfers feel like they’ve found a hidden gem.
